Virtualization is the process of designing, developing and deploying a data center on virtualization and cloud computing technologies. It incorporates an extensive range of processes, tools and technologies, allowing a physical data center to provide services on top of virtualization technology. Utilizing virtualization, a data center can provide and or host many virtualized data centers functioning on the same infrastructure – allowing simultaneous usage by multiple organization and applications. Simply put, virtualization ultimately creates a data center that is virtual/cloud.

Two mainstream products utilized in the virtualization process are: “Hyper-V” (developed by Microsoft Corporation) which utilizes hypervisor-based emulations when providing IT managed services like virtualization; and “VCenter Server” (developed by VMWare) which centralizes resource provisioning, management and operation, and evaluation of the performance of virtual machines which reside on a distributed virtual data center.
